Over the past few years, the enclosed pistol red dot market has exploded. What was once considered premium, duty-only technology has become far more accessible, giving everyday shooters a wealth of excellent options without having to spend a fortune.

The latest optic to catch my attention is the Primary Arms CLX Enclosed Reflex Sight with AutoLive. On paper, it looks like Primary Arms has carefully considered what shooters actually want in a modern pistol optic and packaged it into a feature-rich enclosed red dot that competes directly with some of the biggest names in the industry at an affordable cost. 

But how does it stack up against competitors like the Olight Osight SE, Holosun's enclosed lineup, AKRA Origin X, and Vector Optics' enclosed red dots?

Let's take a closer look.

First Impressions

The Primary Arms CLX is built around the popular RMSc footprint, making it compatible with many modern concealed carry and compact pistols. It features a crisp 3 MOA red dot, a fully enclosed emitter to keep dust, dirt and moisture away from the LED, and AutoLive motion activation, which automatically powers the optic on when movement is detected and turns it off when left stationary, all pretty standard with modern red dots. 

Battery life is rated at approximately 21,000 hours, while ten brightness settings—including two-night vision modes—allow it to adapt to virtually any lighting condition, something new for me that I have not seen on other redo dots.

One feature I particularly like is the integrated backup rear iron sight. It's one of those practical additions that often gets overlooked until you actually need it. Should your battery fail or the optic become unusable, you can immediately transition to your iron sights without removing the optic.

Primary Arms has also included a side-loading CR1632 battery compartment, meaning battery changes can be made without removing the optic or losing your zero. It's another feature that's quickly becoming a must-have on modern pistol optics and something I really like as removing the dot and losing zero just to replace a battery is very annoying. 

To top it all off, Primary Arms backs the CLX with a lifetime warranty, something that always inspires confidence when buying a new optic.

Looking purely at the specification sheet, it's difficult to find anything missing. Primary Arms has included nearly every feature shooters have been asking for in a modern enclosed carry optic.

Olight Osight SE

The Olight Osight SE has quickly become one of the biggest surprises in the affordable enclosed optic market.

It offers a fully enclosed emitter, a generous viewing window, Shake Awake technology, an integrated backup rear sight and excellent battery life, all at a very competitive price.

The Osight SE has built a loyal following among everyday shooters, with many reporting thousands of rounds without losing zero. While it doesn't yet have the decades-long reputation of brands like Holosun, it has certainly earned its place in the conversation.

Comparing it directly with the CLX is actually more difficult than I expected. Both optics offer enclosed emitters, motion activation, side-loading batteries and integrated rear sights.

Where the Osight SE still stands out is its larger viewing window and aggressive pricing. The Primary Arms CLX, however, answers back with a lifetime warranty, AutoLive technology and the confidence that comes from a company that's built a solid reputation in the optics world.

For me, this is one of those comparisons where there isn't really a wrong answer. It simply depends on what features matter most to you.

AKRA Origin X Enclosed

AKRA has quietly been producing some very interesting optics over the past few years.

The Origin X Enclosed offers a fully enclosed emitter, a 3 MOA dot, Shake-to-Wake technology, a claimed 50,000-hour battery life, a side-loading CR2032 battery and a rugged waterproof housing.

The biggest difference here is the mounting footprint.

The AKRA is aimed at shooters running the increasingly popular ACRO footprint, while the Primary Arms CLX is designed around the RMSc footprint commonly found on many concealed carry pistols.

If your pistol is already cut for RMSc optics, the CLX is the simpler option. If you're invested in the ACRO ecosystem, the Origin X remains well worth considering.

Holosun Enclosed Optics

Whenever enclosed pistol optics are discussed, Holosun inevitably enters the conversation—and for good reason.

Over the last several years, Holosun has built one of the strongest reputations in the industry through consistent reliability and innovation.

Features such as Shake Awake, Solar Failsafe, multi-reticle systems and exceptional battery life have made Holosun the benchmark that many manufacturers are trying to compete with.

Their optics have proven themselves on concealed carry pistols, competition guns and duty firearms around the world.

The downside, of course, is price.

Most enclosed Holosun optics cost considerably more than the Primary Arms CLX.

If you're looking for a proven optic with years of real-world success behind it, Holosun remains difficult to beat. But if you're trying to maximise value while still getting modern features, the CLX certainly deserves serious consideration.

Vector Optics

I've always felt that Vector Optics doesn't get quite the recognition it deserves.

Their enclosed pistol optics generally offer solid construction, good glass quality, competitive pricing and dependable performance for recreational shooters and competitors alike.

While they may not have quite the same reputation as Holosun, Vector has steadily improved its products over the years and continues to offer excellent value for money.

The Primary Arms CLX enters this exact part of the market—not trying to replace the premium brands, but giving shooters another well-equipped option without stretching the budget.

So Where Does the CLX Fit In?

After looking at all of these optics, I don't think the Primary Arms CLX is trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it takes features we've come to expect from premium enclosed optics and packages them into something that's affordable for the average shooter.

For me, the biggest selling points are the AutoLive motion activation, integrated backup rear sight, side-loading battery and lifetime warranty. Those are features that genuinely matter in day-to-day use, especially if you're carrying a pistol or shooting regularly.

At the same time, each of its competitors still has something to offer. The Osight SE continues to impress with its large viewing window and excellent value. Holosun remains the benchmark for proven reliability and years of hard use. AKRA is a great option for shooters already invested in the ACRO footprint, while Vector Optics continues to deliver dependable performance at an attractive price.

That's what makes today's enclosed optic market so exciting. There isn't one optic that completely dominates the others anymore. Instead, it's becoming a matter of deciding which features matter most to you and choosing the optic that best fits your needs and your budget.

Any Concerns?

As with any new optic, only time will tell how well it performs over years of real-world use.

Specifications can tell us a lot, but they don't reveal how an optic will handle thousands of rounds, daily concealed carry, harsh weather, repeated drops or constant abuse.

Initial feedback from early users has generally been positive, although there have been a handful of isolated reports regarding durability. That's not unusual for any new product, and Primary Arms' lifetime warranty certainly adds some reassurance while the CLX builds its long-term reputation.

My Final Thoughts

The enclosed pistol optic market has never been more competitive, and that's fantastic news for shooters.

Whether you're considering the Primary Arms CLX, Olight Osight SE, Holosun EPS, AKRA Origin X or one of Vector Optics' enclosed offerings, today's buyers are getting significantly more technology and performance for their money than they were just a few years ago.

What impresses me most about the Primary Arms CLX is how complete the package feels. An enclosed emitter, AutoLive motion activation, an integrated backup rear iron sight, side-loading battery compartment, RMSc footprint and a lifetime warranty combine to create an optic that offers premium features without carrying a premium price tag.

Is it enough to tempt shooters away from the more established names?

I think it certainly has the potential.

Holosun has earned its reputation through years of proven reliability, and that kind of trust isn't built overnight. But if the CLX performs as well in long-term use as its specifications suggest, I genuinely believe it could become one of the standout enclosed pistol optics in the budget-to-mid-range market.

For anyone shopping for a modern enclosed pistol optic, the Primary Arms CLX is definitely one worth keeping an eye on.
