Your journey to responsible firearm ownership starts with Southern Sky Operations. Owning a firearm in South Africa comes with legal responsibilities. Before you can legally possess a firearm, you must complete the prescribed proficiency training, obtain a competency certificate from the South African Police Service (SAPS), and successfully apply for a firearm licence.

In terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, applicants must generally:
Each step must be completed in order. Southern Sky Operations guides you through the process from your first training session.
Complete the prescribed proficiency training at an accredited training institution.
Submit the SAPS 517 form and supporting documents to the DFO at your local police station.
Once your competency is approved, submit the SAPS 271 form with a detailed motivation.
Your first step is to complete the prescribed firearm proficiency training at an accredited training institution. You need to be in store to purchase the manuals to start the process. Southern Sky Operations offers professional training for the following firearm categories:
Our training programmes include the prescribed study material, theoretical assessments and practical firearm handling and shooting assessments.
We guide you through the learning process to ensure that you understand the relevant firearm legislation, safety principles and responsible firearm handling.
Once you have successfully completed all the required assessments, your results will be processed and your training certificate and statement of results will be issued in accordance with the applicable training requirements.

Once you have successfully completed your proficiency training, you can proceed with your competency certificate application. You will need to submit the prescribed SAPS 517 application form together with your supporting documentation to the Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) at the police station responsible for your residential area.
The application process includes the required identification, supporting documents and fingerprinting.
SAPS will assess your application and determine whether you meet the legal requirements for a competency certificate.
Important: You must receive your approved competency certificate before proceeding with your firearm licence application.

Your application must include a detailed motivation explaining why you require the firearm and the legal basis under which you are applying. Supporting documentation will depend on the type of licence and purpose of possession.
SAPS will assess your application, including the motivation and supporting documents. You will also need to comply with the prescribed firearm storage and safe inspection requirements.
Once your application has been approved and all outstanding requirements have been met, your firearm licence will be issued.
